Jackfruit: Health Benefits, Nutrition & Side Effects

One of the largest fruits in the world is the jackfruit, and it's taking the kitchens by storm! Hard and spiky on the outside, soft, sweet and good on the inside. In this video, we will explain its nutrition, health benefits and some side effects you should be aware of prior to consuming it.

What Is Jackfruit?

Jackfruit is a large tropical fruit that is grown on evergreen trees in South and Southeast Asia. Stiff, thick rough green skin, and sweet juicy yellow flesh and large edible seeds. Jackfruit is naturally sweet once it's ripe and can be consumed fresh or in desserts, smoothies, and fruit salads. When unripe, it's stringy, firm, and mild, making it useful in a variety of dishes, including tacos, curries, sandwiches and burgers, as a substitute for shredded meat. Unripe jackfruit is recently used around the world in vegan and vegetarian cooking due to its natural plant origin and texture that closely resembles that of pulled pork or chicken.

Nutrition Facts.

Jack Fruit contains lots of health-giving nutrients. A serving of the jackfruit has a moderate amount of fibre, Vitamin C, potassium and even some plant protein. It also has some natural sugars, giving it its sweet taste. In addition, it's low in fat and without any cholesterol, making it a part of a healthy balanced diet.

Health Benefits.

However, in addition to its taste, jackfruit is also rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which are beneficial for overall health. It has vitamin-c content which can strengthen your body's immune system, prevent infection and speed up recovery. The high fibre content aids in proper digestion, prevents constipation and nourishes the beneficial bacteria in the gut leading to better digestive health. Jackfruit is also a great source of potassium, which is important for maintaining proper muscle function, regulating blood pressure and keeping heart healthy. Besides, the fruit's fiber and natural plant compounds could aid in controlling blood sugar by slowing the rate of sugar absorption in the bloodstream, some studies indicate. Jackfruit is safe for diabetics, but should be served at the proper amount to be a good choice in their diet program.

Side Effects.

Jackfruit is nutritious, but may lead to bloat or upset stomach due to its high fiber content if consumed in excess. However, people with pollen or birch allergies can also be allergic to jackfruit, so a tasting is recommended before eating them. However, if you are taking blood-thinning medication, discuss the use of jackfruit in your diet with your physician, as it may have an effect on blood clotting.
